We have a vast experience with our previous entity House of Hope Food barn where we started from nothing and after three moves to our last location which was 1600 square metres in size. This became one of the most significant charities in the state and received the Community Group of the Year Award for NSW and ACT in 2017. We delivered over 58 ton of food per week in the Illawarra and developed working partnerships with Coles ,Woolworths and IGA and a total of 64 other agencies. Our social return on investment to the community was 8 million dollars per annum.
Through our partnerships, we source rescued food from from every IGA. Coles and Woolworths supermarket from Thirroul to Nowra with two trucks daily and our six tons pantech truck picking up from Sydney weekly. We delivered a 500 children’s school breakfast program weekly locally through our partnership with Vinnies and we also distributed food vouchers to Salvation Army, Anglicare and various other connections.
Alternatively other charities, community groups, churches and even a community bus would transport people from Helensburgh to our charity to obtain food and a helping hand. Woolworth’s provided $50,000 to build a commercial kitchen which was used to train our students, cook meals that were distributed to different community centres and given out to people in need, also cafe at the barn was used for training purposes and providing meals.
As we had a supermarket style facility we utilised that to train long term unemployed who gained employment with Coles, Woolworths and other retailers with 83 percent success rate. We also had a training men’s shed style workshop to train young people in automotive repair. We also had a Community gardens project growing our own food. These training programmes were funded by the Federal Government.
